Biblical Counseling & Discipleship

Biblical counseling at GraceLife is an intentional personal discipleship ministry among God's people within the local church, that depends on the authority and sufficiency of Scripture through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Biblical counseling in reality is already happening within the normal life of the church body as we seek to serve one another (Rom 15:14; Gal 6:1-2; Jam 5:19-20). Organized biblical counseling, however, is the purposeful and intensive discipleship of a believer towards a growing maturity in Christ (Col 1:28) with the aim to be pleasing to Him (1 Cor 5:9). This goal is to be our focus whether our circumstances change or not. Therefore, God's Word, when properly understood and wisely applied, determines our goals and Christian walk. We do not establish our own objectives independently.
In striving towards maturity in Christ, we rely solely on the sufficiency and authority of Scripture (2Tim 3:16-17). Scripture teaches us to biblically interpret and understand ourselves, our circumstances and the world around us. There is also no other source of knowledge that yields a true transformation of the human heart through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, Scripture is truly sufficient to deal with suffering and sin. It teaches us to respond faithfully in the midst of suffering and calls us to repent of sin.
By way of contrast, biblical counseling does not constitute, imply or integrate psychiatric, psychological, or other forms of counseling. It also is not social work, therapy, or licensed secular counseling. Practically, biblical counseling is individual discipleship where biblical truth is taught to a person for the resolution of sin, reconciliation or encouragement in the midst of suffering. This personal discipleship ministry is to foster genuine heart change in order to be pleasing to Christ and bring Him glory.
